![]() Choral music by the celebrated Neapolitan composer and prince of Venosa. Carlo Gesualdo's music is often of a highly chromatic nature with striking dissonances which strive for maximum intensity. Gesualdo has also achieved notoriety for his part in contriving to have his first wife, Maria d'Avalos, and her lover murdered. Gesualdo's sacred music exhibits a more restrained musical voice and while chromatic elements are still to be found his sacred music avoids the frequent rhythmic interruptions found in his madrigals. This recording offers his responsories for Good Friday and a group of five Marian motets.
