The Symphony in Waves was written in 1989 and dedicated to Kernis's teacher, John Adams. The String Quartet dates from a year later and is another very approachable work that is reminiscent of the finesse of Ravel.

Philadelphia-born Kernis has said "I find myself more comfortable with music that is consistently beautiful (or pretty) than dissonant or tense like most modernist music."
