The English composer Wiiliam Lawes was one of the most important of his generation and was appointed "musician in ordinary for the lutes and voices" to Chales I in 1635. Lawes was very prolific and the stylised dance suite is well represented in his output and his viol consorts show late Renaissance traits. He also produced a great deal of vocal music and is regarded as the most important English dramatic composer before Purcell. This collection of some consort music was first released in 1968 and was a truly pioneering recording in exploring some characteristic works by this important English composer and it was warmly received when reviewed then: "This is a delightful recod; though perhaps its somewhat unusual delights will be best revealed to those willing to persevere with the music ... magnificent music, but by no means easy or frivolous listening. And by no means easy for the performers ... the sound is small and intimate. All told this is a most attractive record."
