Earth Dances is Birtwistle's most important large-scale orchestral work of the 1980s (it was completed in 1986).
Panic is a brilliantly virtuosic showpiece for saxophone, drum-kit, and orchestra which achieved notoriety when it had its world premiere at the Last Night of the Proms in September 1995.
- features virtuoso saxophonist John Harle.

“There is no more individual or intractable voice in British music today than Harrison Birtwistle. ... Earth Dances is a slow-moving ritual, brilliantly written for the orchestra, here superbly played in Cleveland ...”
