![]() Turnage: Greek
Bernas
Greek is Turnage's first opera and is based on the play of the same name by Steven Berkoff. The work was an immediate success when first given at the Munich Biennale in June 1968. It has had a number of performances both in the UK and abroad and an award-winning BBC film was made of it in 1989. Greek is a translation of the Oedipus myth into the contemporary East End of London in which racism, violence and mass unemployment act as metaphors for the plague that afflicts London, and form the background for the story of Eddy.
